Join the Ecology Action Centre Board!

The Ecology Action Centre is looking for board members. Board members keep the institutional lights on at the EAC and help shape the direction of the organization.

The EAC has a 50+ year history of protecting Nova Scotia’s lands, waters, climate, and communities. The EAC’s spirit matches its home province – scrappy, creative, and always punching above its weight. Come join the board and help us set a sustainable path for the next 50 years. You can make a difference along with our kind, caring and compassionate team.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for 4-5 new board members. This year we are particularly looking for someone with non-profit leadership experience. We welcome all kinds of experience, and we appreciate that everyone brings something unique to the table. No one has every type of experience all at once, but here are some qualities that we would consider assets:

- Experience with:

  • Board governance
  • Financial management
  • Senior leadership
  • Community work including with non-profits, community groups, small businesses, etc.
  • Acting as an organizational champion and/or supporting fundraising

- An approach that is:

  • collaborative,
  • caring,
  • creative, and
  • innovative
- Familiarity with the Ecology Action Centre and an interest in its future
- Commitment to justice, equity and inclusion
- An interest in the environment and community resilience
- An interest and expertise in institutional strategic thinking
- A system-level approach (addressing systemic issues with systemic thinking)

The EAC is committed to diversity in every way. We want to look like Nova Scotia and the communities we care about. Right now, our board is less diverse than our staff and less diverse than Nova Scotia as a whole. We want to change that while establishing effective long-lasting relationships with communities that we could serve better. We encourage applications from the African Nova Scotian community, and Indigenous people. We encourage all applicants to highlight their diverse life experience and how it could contribute to the EAC’s work at the board.

Position: Board Member at Large

Time commitment: Approximately 30 hours per year.

What this entails: Four 2-hour board meetings per year, plus key events such as the Annual General Meeting and a day-long organization-wide retreat, as well as participation on one of the board committees (Governance, Audit & Risk, Nominations) or an operational committee (e.g. Justice Equity Diversity & Inclusion).

Term length: Three years with the option of a second term

Start date: September 2026

How to apply:

If you have any questions or would like to chat about your suitability, email Assistant to the Directors, [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
