ABOUT YOU  

You have a passion for supporting community leadership in environmental stewardship. You have expertise in participatory mapping, research and data collection, community engagement, and policy advocacy. You understand marine protected areas processes in Canada. You have experience working in partnership with Indigenous organizations and with ocean users in Newfoundland (e.g., fish harvesters, municipalities, tourism operators). You understand the importance of sustainable livelihoods and strong community relationships. You are comfortable advocating for the protection of the marine environment and working collaboratively with national marine conservation organizations to advance shared goals. 

ABOUT THE JOB 

The Marine Protection and Planning Coordinator will work to support EAC’s community-led marine planning work, primarily in Western Newfoundland, ensuring strong partnerships with Rightsholders and other ocean sector stakeholders to advance program goals. The Coordinator has community engagement and technical experience in marine spatial planning, project management, and creative problem-solving.  They work collaboratively with EAC staff and coalition colleagues to support national marine protection campaigns. They are comfortable within a fast-paced, information-rich ENGO environment, navigating sensitive campaign strategy discussions with partners. They know how to learn on the go, adapt as necessary, lean on their teammates, and get results. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Designing and delivering a shared marine planning and mapping initiative with Indigenous partners in Western Newfoundland. 

  • Co-developing participatory community mapping sessions and collaborative research ideas to support Indigenous-led marine management objectives. 

  • Creating outreach materials to support meaningful engagement with community participants. 

  • Supporting strategy and execution of EAC marine protection priorities at regional and national levels in collaboration with Marine staff and SeaBlue Canada partners. 

  • Attending coalition and marine protection advisory committee meetings on behalf of EAC. 

  • Ensuring systems are in place to coordinate and track the successful and timely completion of overall project objectives being carried out by project staff and partners. 

  • Keeping abreast of marine protection-related developments from all levels of government, tracking progress on Canada’s commitments to Marine Conservation Targets.  

  • Sharing EAC’s marine protection policy priorities with relevant decision-makers, partner organizations, and the media; acting as a spokesperson for EAC on marine protection as needed.  

  • Contributing to funder reporting as required, supporting related grant proposals and other fundraising efforts in conjunction with the Marine Senior Coordinator. 

  • Working with EAC Communications Team to effectively communicate programming as necessary.  

Other duties as required. 

WHAT YOU BRING  

  • At least three years of experience in community engagement and project leadership. 

  • Experience in policy development and engagement in marine conservation.  

  • Background and/or education in participatory mapping, community-led marine planning, Indigenous stewardship/management systems, and/or marine protection policy. 

  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture in Newfoundland and Labrador. 

  • Proven skills as a relationship builder and talented at creating strong partnerships; relational skills that function to connect with community and coalition partners. 

  • Experience organizing group meetings and event planning. 

  • Ability to self-start, with strong organizational and priority settings skills. 

  • Ability to handle sensitive information in collaborative settings with diverse individuals. 

  • A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and a cultivated ability to apply an anti-oppression lens to community development and project management. 

  • Strong work ethic and motivation to work on marine conservation 

  • Available to work on the occasional evening/weekends; willing to travel.   

  • Valid driver’s license, access to vehicle. 

  • Experience using ArcGIS, NVivo Software, R-Studio and Microsoft programs is an asset.  

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   

  • Part-time: 22.5 hr work week ; Monday - Thursday with some flexibility in the workday.  

  • Term: Immediate start - March 31, 2027, possibility of extension dependent on funding 

  • Remuneration: $34.00-37.50 per hour commensurate with experience. 

  • 4 weeks vacation and 10 paid health days, pro-rated for a 22.5 hr/work week;12 paid Holidays, cost-shared benefits plan 

  • This position is located in Western Newfoundland
